Tips for healthy teeth and gums

Keep your teeth healthy:- Having the right oral hygiene habits will go a long way in ensuring you have healthy teeth for a lifetime.  Practising most of these habits isn’t difficult and won’t take you hours as well; as such, you shouldn’t have any excuses for neglecting to do them.

Visiting your dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and teeth cleaning as well as during dental emergencies is a good start when it comes to maintaining good oral health. And to keep your teeth healthy all the time, make sure you include these practices in your regular routine: 

1.    Brush properly

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is a must to maintain good oral health. It is particularly important that you brush before going to sleep to get rid of all the germs and plaque that have accumulated during the day.

It is also crucial that you brush your teeth correctly.  When brushing, move your toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to remove plaque. Do this for at least two minutes and make sure you scrub all surfaces clean. Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove plaque and bacteria as well.

Lastly, replace your toothbrush every three months so that it will always be effective in removing plaque and leftover food debris from your teeth.

2.    Floss once daily

Flossing is not simply about removing the little pieces of meat or vegetable stuck between your teeth. When you floss, you stimulate and lower the inflammation in your gums and reduce plaque. To do so you must understand what floss means.

Break off about 20 inches of floss/thread and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger will take up the floss as it becomes dirty.



Hold the floss/thread tightly between your

 thumbs and forefingers.



Guide the floss/thread between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. 

Never snap the floss/thread into the gums. 



When the floss/thread reaches the gum line, curve it into a C 

shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.



Hold the floss/thread tightly against the tooth.

 Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss

 away from the gum with up and down motions.

 Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth. 

Don’t forget the backside of your last tooth. 

Once you’re finished, throw the floss away and use new floss every time.

3.    Drink plenty of water every day

When you drink water after every meal, you wash out some of the residue and negative effects of the sticky and acidic foods and beverages you consumed. Water also helps neutralize acidity that can erode tooth enamel and weaken the teeth.

You would also do well to rinse your mouth or gargle with water after eating. This will help get all of those leftover food pieces out of your mouth. Gargling also aids in speeding up the remineralization process of the teeth.

4.    Use fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride is an important mineral which strengthens the teeth enamel. This, in turn, fortifies your teeth to fight off cavities. Fluoride also acts as a protective barrier for your teeth.

To be sure you are getting enough fluoride, use toothpaste with fluoride. You can also ask your dentist if you need more fluoride. If this is the case, your dentist may put a fluoride application on your teeth.

5.    Limit your intake of sugary and acidic foods

Candy and other high-fructose foods contain loads of sugar that ultimately convert into acid in the mouth. This acid will then erode the enamel of your teeth and lead to cavities.

Acidic beverages including soda, tea, coffee and some fruits are nearly the same as well. Drinking and eating acidic beverages and foods frequently can also wear down your tooth enamel.

Although avoiding these foods and beverages can be difficult, you need to start limiting your intake of these. Knowing how to make smarter eating decisions will help you maintain good oral health as well.

6.    Have a healthy diet

If you’re looking to consume less sugary and acidic treats, start snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables. They are loaded with a variety of nutrients including calcium and vitamin D which help strengthen your teeth.

Include more dairy products, fish, grains and nuts in your daily diet, too. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals that will help you maintain and improve your oral and overall health.

7.    Protect your teeth

If you love playing sports, especially those that require physical contact, make sure you protect your teeth. This is because many cases of dental trauma happen during the heat of a game. 

To block blows to the teeth, always wear a mouthguard while playing or engaging in sports. You can get this from a pharmacy or a sporting goods store. You can also request that your dentist make a customized mouth guard which will fit better in your mouth.

8.    Stop smoking

Finally, if you smoke, it’s best to quit right now. Tobacco stains your teeth, causing them to have a yellow tint. Smoking also gives you bad breath and affects your saliva production, which will have a negative impact on your oral health.

Smoking also has a variety of negative effects on your body, so it is best to stop smoking as soon as you can.

Avoid clenching or grinding of teeth. Some people have a habit of clenching. Teeth wear takes place and hence severe sensitivity of teeth.

Consumption of a daily multivitamin is normally suggested. Few dentists suggest consuming calcium and vitamin D for your oral health.
